Product Description
Meditation balls can be used to help bring zen, balance, and relaxation into your life, helping to strengthen mind, body and spirit in the process . These balls are sometimes referred to as Zen Relaxation Balls, Baoding Balls, Chinese Medicine Balls, Worry Balls, Stress Balls, and they go by other names as well.
The way they work is you place two balls in the palm of one hand and then rotate the balls in your hand either clockwise or counter clockwise. The process of doing this exercise keeps all of the points within your hand in constant motion, causing the muscles in the fingers and forearms to contract and relax harmoniously. Repetition of this process can help to reduce stress, anxiety and worry, and promotes feelings of balance, zen, and relaxation.
As this exercise requires hand muscle strength and coordination to keep the balls from falling out of your hand, at first the process may require a slight learning curve which is perfectly fine. As you begin to learn the process, you may let the balls gently rub along one another as you develop your technique, rhythm and strength. The learning curve of being able to keep the meditation balls in your hand in a constant flowing motion without letting them fall is a mindfulness practice in and of itself. With time and practice, the ultimate goal would be to eventually be able to rotate the balls in your hand without letting the balls touch each other, without dropping them, and switching between clockwise and counter clockwise directions. In time you could even advance to rotating two sets of balls in both hands simultaneously!
The exercise and practice of working with meditation balls over time may help lead to strengthened hand muscles and improved joint movement and it is believed by many that it works as an alternative medicine to improve memory, brain function and improve sleep.
Note: The special decorative painting on these balls will scratch and chip if dropped on a hard surface. It is highly recommended for beginners that when first learning how to balance your meditation balls you start out by practicing over a soft surface such as a cushioned bed to help prevent damage to your meditation balls if they are accidentally dropped.
History
Chinese iron balls have long been famed as one of the "three treasures" of Baoding, China. First produced during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), iron balls have often been improved through the ages by skilled Chinese handicraftsmen.
Originally these balls were simple, solid, cylindrical objects. Later, handicraftsmen began designing hollow balls and inserting sounding plates that produce high and low tones when used. These lighter balls are easier to handle and the musical tones contribute to the relaxation process that results from exercising with them.
